Sarlat La Canéda and surrounding area

Our town of Sarlat La Canéda, in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne, is a beautiful medieval town full of history and charm. The town is a bustling tourist destination for most of the year which means there are many restaurants and shops to cover all tastes and budgets, as well as plenty of fabulous hotels and apartment/house rentals. Twice each week the town comes even more alive with its famous french markets which are not to be missed - produce and food on Wednesdays and food plus clothing, pottery, art, leather goods, etc on the largest day Saturday. See some social media examples here and here and of course many movies have been filmed here.

Our location is ideal - between two major cities with international airports; Bordeaux and Toulouse, as well as Bergerac for anyone flying in from the UK. The TGV (fast train) runs from Paris to Bordeaux in 2.5 hours where you can catch another train to Sarlat. The regular train runs between Toulouse and Paris and stops in Souillac which is a 30 minute car or bus ride into Sarlat.

This area is 2 hours from both Bordeaux and Toulouse, 1 hour from Bergerac and 2.5 hours from the beaches of the Atlantic.

Bordeaux - a UNESCO World Heritage city, a port city and a wine destination! With it's beautiful architecture and highly walkable streets there is a lot to discover here, from the historic city centre to the modern art gallery, wine tours and more, you will not be disappointed by the sights, smells and sounds of Bordeaux. The train from Bordeaux to Sarlat stops in one of the most well known wine towns, St. Emilion, so don't hesitate to add it to your itinerary.

Carcassonne – and its original ancient, walled city and castle - La Cité – has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  The walled city was used as the set for the movie Robin Hood. Carcassonne is on the main rail line connecting Montpellier / Beziers / Narbonne / Toulouse / Bordeaux which then leads to the TGV to Paris. Rail service is also available to Barcelona in Spain.

Toulouse is the 4th largest city in France. It is the headquarters for Airbus Industries and thus has excellent air service to and from the States and anywhere else in Europe. A bustling city atmosphere surrounds the old central plaza with its history of wine merchants plying their trade up and down the Canal du Midi which connects Toulouse to Carcassonne, Narbonne and the Mediterranean Sea.

How to reach Sarlat La Canéda from your French airport

From Bordeaux Airport
Take the Navette (bus) from outside the airport to Bordeaux. You can buy your ticket in advance from 30direct.com, where you will also find the latest timetable. You can also buy your ticket on board the Navette using your contactless payment card. This comfortable bus will drop you at Bordeaux St Jean train station. From there, you can take the train directly to Sarlat, which is the final stop on the trainline so you're sure not to miss your stop.

If you find yourself with time to spare in Bordeaux, there is secure luggage storage in the train station - go down the escalator in Hall 2 and the luggage storage is there. It costs €5 for two hours or €5.50 for 24 hours, which gives you time to explore a little of the historic center. Taxis, buses and trams are available outside of the train station. Uber operates in Bordeaux as well.

From Toulouse Airport
Take the Navette (bus) from outside the airport to Toulouse Matabiau SNCF station. From there, take the train to Souillac where you will be collected by one of our team. We will need advance notice of your arrival to plan your collection. Taxis and Uber cars are also available to get you from the airport to the train station.

(For European travellers) From Bergerac Airport
There is a Navette, but you may want to check the timings of the Navette to make sure that it operates at the same time as the trains into Sarlat. If it is not convenient, then you can take a taxi from the airport to the train station which costs around €30.  The train will take you straight into Sarlat.

Your Train Tickets: You will need to buy your train ticket at the station or in advance from SNCF where you can also check the train times.  SNCF also has a handy phone app - and both can be set for english translation.

Private Car Service - We recommend Tour In Perigord for anyone wanting a private car hire to / from one of the airports or for any sightseeing adventures before or after the workshop.  The owner / driver is fully english speaking and gives beautiful tours of the Perigord Noir and the river valleys/cave dwellings/castles.

Lodging Information...
The following information includes choices for lodging that range from top end hotels to comfortable B&B settings (called Gites here in France).  This is the most time sensitive part of your planning… Sarlat La Canéda is popular in tourist season so rooms and rentals are at a premium during peak times, but out of season the prices are far more affordable.   The main season is June through mid-October.
